iPhone Love and Hate #2

I Wish My iPhone…

… wouldn’t popup 3 error messages in the Mail app when I have no network connection. Whenever this happens, I get the following error messages in sequence:

  • Could not activate cellular data network
  • Cannot Get Mail – The connection to the server failed.
  • Cannot Get Mail – The mail server “mail.mac.com” is not responding. Verify that you have entered the correct account info in Mail settings.

In addition to the mac.com e-mail address, I have two other accounts as well (Yahoo and Google). Neither of those accounts gives an error message in this situation.

I think that a single error message would suffice in this situation. I would suggest a combination of the first and second ones would be best; something like ‘Cannot Get Mail – network is unavailable’

I Love That My iPhone…

… lets me correct pronunciation for entries with phonetic spelling in my address book. As I mentioned in my Love from last time, I frequently use Voice Control to dial my iPhone. As good as the iPhone is at pronunciation, it still gets some names wrong1, especially with lots of relatives with Welsh names.

Adding Phonetic spelling is done via the Add Field entry in the address. Edit the entry in the address book, scroll down to the bottom of the page, and tap add field. On the Add Field page, tap the Phonetic First Name and/or Phonetic Last Name fields and enter the appropriate phonetic spelling for the name(s).
